GETTING READY FOR A BAKED GOODS SALE

My daughter's school is having a Bake Sale and I volunteered to bring in some treats. I haven't narrowed down my choices yet but thought I would share the recipes I have collected for consideration. I also plan to use these recipes for holiday gifts. Enjoy the recipes below and remember, I haven't tried them yet, so look over the recipe for missing ingredients and make it your own. Lemon Snowdrops

1   cup butter or margarine
1/2   cup powdered sugar
1   teaspoon lemon extract
2   cups all-purpose flour
1/4   teaspoon salt

Lemon Filling

1/4   cup sugar
2 1/4   teaspoons cornstarch
1/4   cup water
1   tablespoon butter or margarine
1   teaspoon grated lemon, rind of
4 1/2   teaspoons lemon juice
  drops yellow food coloring (optional)
  powdered sugar, for dusting when done

1.  Preheat your oven to 400*. 2.  In a medium bowl, mix the butter/margarine, 1/2 cup powdered sugar and the lemon extract. 3.  Stir in the flour and salt. 4.  If the dough is too soft, refrigerate a few hours until it's firm enough to shape. 5.  Shape dough into 1" balls. 6.  Place about 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. 7.  Flatten slightly with the bottom of a glass dipped in granulated sugar. 8.  Bake 8-10 minute or until the edges are light brown. 9.  Immediately remove from the cookie sheet to cool. 10.  Put the cookies together in pairs with the filling and then dust with the powdered sugar. 11.  For the Filling: Mix the sugar and cornstarch in a 1 quart saucepan. 12.  Stir in the remaining ingredients. 13.  Cooking over medium heat, keep stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil. 14.  Boil 1 minute, stirring all the while, then cool. 15.  Enjoy!

Lemon Brownies

1 (18   ounces) box lemon cake mix
1 (3   ounces) package lemon gelatin
1/2   cup cooking oil
3   eggs
1   cup icing sugar
1/2   cup lemon juice

1.  Grease and flour a 13" X 9" pan. 2.  Preheat oven to 325°F Beat together the dry cake mix, dry Jello powder, oil, and eggs. 3.  Pour into the prepared pan. 4.  Bake at 325F for 25 to 30 minutes or until done. 5.  Remove from oven. 6.  Immediately punch lots of holes all over the cake with a toothpick. 7.  Combine icing sugar and lemon juice with a wire whisk until smooth. 8.  Spoon all over the cake.

Original Butterscotch Brownies

1/2   cup margarine, melted
1   tablespoon milk
1   cup packed brown sugar
1   egg
1   cup flour
1/2   teaspoon baking powder
1/4   teaspoon salt
1   tablespoon vanilla
1/2   cup nuts (or other mix-ins) (optional)

No Bake Chocolate Cookies

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup butter
3 cups oats
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup peanut butter

Place sugar, cocoa, milk, and butter in large pot. Bring to a boil; cook 1 minute. Remove from heat and add peanut butter. Blend well. Stir in oatmeal and vanilla. Drop by teaspoon onto waxed paper and cool.

Sugar Cookies

2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 1/3 cup shortening
1 cup buttermilk
2 Tbsp lemon
6 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp soda
1 tsp salt

Cream together, sugar, eggs, shortening, and lemon. Sift flour, baking powder, soda, and salt. Add buttermilk and flour to sugar mixture. Put in refrigerator over night. Roll and cut. Bake at 400° for 7 minutes.

Coconut Drop Cookies

6 cups shredded coconut
5 cups granulated sugar
3 cups all-purpose flour
6 eggs
1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

In the large bowl of an electric mixer, combine all of the ingredients and beat until thoroughly mixed. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper. Roll the cookie dough into 1-inch balls and place them 2 inches apart on the baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes, or until browned on the bottom and around the edges. Cool the cookies on a wire rack. Store in an airtight container. Reprinted by permission of Doubleday. All rights reserved.

Cookie On A Stick Source: Nestle® Toll House® Makes 8 cookies

These cookies are the perfect recipe to collaborate on with your kids! They're as much fun to make as they are to eat. 1 package (18 ounces) Nestlé® Toll House® Refrigerated Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
8 flat wooden sticks
Decorator icing (optional)
Candies (optional)
Melted chocolate (optional)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Shape cookie dough into eight 2-inch balls. Place four balls at a time onto ungreased baking sheet. Insert wooden sticks into each ball to resemble a lollipop; flatten dough slightly. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes or until edges are crisp. Cool on baking sheet for 1 minute; remove to wire racks to cool completely. Decorate as desired. Tie ribbons around sticks and give as a cookie bouquet. Reprinted by permission of Nestle® Toll House®. All rights reserved.

Lemon Cookies

1 cup sugar
16 tablespoons (1/2 pound) margarine
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons lemon extract

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In the bowl of a stand mixer with a paddle attachment or with a handheld mixer, cream together the sugar and margarine until light and fluffy, about 1 minute. Add the flour and lemon extract and continue to beat on low speed for 2 minutes, or until the flour has been incorporated and a dough has formed. Don’t overmix the dough or the cookies will be tough.

FORM THE COOKIES: Pinch off ping-pong size pieces of dough and using the palms of your hands roll them into balls. Transfer the balls to the baking sheet, laying them 2 inches apart to allow for spreading. Bake the cookies for 15 minutes, until they are lightly browned on the edges. Cool on a rack before serving.

Peanut Butter Cookies

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and the brown sugar until mixture is light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Sift together the flour, salt, and baking soda. Add to the butter-sugar mixture, a small amount at a time. Stir in the peanut butter and vanilla; mix well. Drop teaspoonfuls of batter 2 inches apart on a greased baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes or until cookies are done. Reprinted by permission of Doubleday. All rights reserved.

Lemon Tea Cake

1 cup softened butter
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon lemon extract
2 eggs
1 teaspoon lemon zest
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons buttermilk
Additional sugar for sprinkling tops

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Beat butter in mixing bowl on medium speed for 1 minute till light, add sugar and lemon extract, beating till light and fluffy. Add eggs and lemon zest and beat well. Stir together flour, baking soda and salt in a mixing bowl. Add to beaten mixture alternating with buttermilk. Drop by rounded teaspoons onto a greased baking sheet. Sprinkle with sugar and bake for approximately 10 to 12 minutes or till lightly browned on edges. Yield: 45 cookies

Carrot Cake Cookies

1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained
3/4 cup shredded carrots
1 cup raisins
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper. 2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, stir in the crushed pineapple, carrots and raisins. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon; stir into the carrot mixture. Mix in the walnuts if desired. Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto the prepared cookie sheets. 3. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes in the preheated oven, until bottoms begin to brown and cookies are set. Allow cookies to cool for a few minutes on the cookie sheets before removing to wire racks to cool completely.

New Project - No Sew Fleece Blanket

NO SEW FLEECE BLANKET
Materials: 1 1/2 yards of patterned fleece 1 1/2 yards coordinating solid fleece Supplies Needed: Scissor Straight pins (large)
Instructions:
Lay both pieces of fabric out on a flat surface on top of each other, putting right sides of fabric facing out. Pin the two sides together, keeping the fabric smooth and without wrinkles. Trim off any unsightly selvage. Be sure to keep both pieces the same size. Cut out a 4" x 4" square out of each corner. Cut approximately 4" slits (adjust as needed) through both layers of fleece, about 1" apart. Tie slits together using a double knot. That's it.

BABY AMANDA QUILT UPDATE:
I finished the "baby Amanda" quilt. It turned into a lovely butterfly quilt. I didn't get the results or detail that I wanted on the machine so I turned to hand stitching. I was very pleased with the results but it took much longer to complete than I had planned. I still have to make quilts for a friend with twin boys. I hope to keep things simple so that I can complete them and give them to her during the holidays.

PROJECTS UPDATE - Candy Scarecrow

As promised, I will give an update on some of my previous projects.

CANDY SCARECROWS

This project turned out really cute. Each scarecrow had its own personality and my daughter and I had a lot of fun making them. I will not be doing this this fall because I don't think it was worth all of the time and concern that I put into it. (i.e. I wouldn't allow my daughter to handle the scarecrows too much because they may have fallen apart). This year we will do something a little easier. I think I will buy stickers and markers and let her decorate white lunch bags for her classmates. I will fill each with goodies. For those of you who would like to try the Candy Scarecrows, here goes:

SCARECROW HOW TO:

Materials:
Glue gun (with cool setting)
1 caramel per scarecrow (head)
- I use Kraft caramels and place the smooth side towards the front so that a face can be easily added
1 box of raisins per scarecrow (body)
2 rolls sweet tarts per scarecrow (arms)
4 rolls tootsie rolls per scarecrow (legs) (tie (with raffia?) at least two rolls together to make a leg)
raffia (decoration)
Tiny straw hat (I found these at Walmart - 16 for $1.96, I think)
Glue all of the pieces together
head - body - arms - legs - hat on head
I am letting my four year old (who has been tying her shoe for over a year now) add the raffia. She will also be responsible for drawing on the faces and adding a banner of each child's name to the body (raisin box) of his/her scarecrow.

Next time I will give an update on the "Baby Amanda" butterfly quilt.

Working with Polymer Clay

I thought I would share a technique for coloring/working with polymer clay. I know that there is an extensive array of colors available but it's nice to make things that are truly one of a kind and cannot be replicated. I haven't tried it yet but thought someone else may be able to use it. Here goes... - stamp design onto polymer clay with black ink - trim and bake (see manufacturer's instructions) - color image with watercolors or acrylic paints (allow ample time for drying) - finish with Future floor wax (This technique was used by "Margaret" in a cardmaking group that I am a member of. She used it to make a sunflower motif which was later glued onto a card. It was really pretty.)

WOW! THE PAGE IS STILL HERE

I was sure that this page had been deleted. It's been an extremely long time since I've checked in. I just moved and have been really busy trying to get organized (I've still got boxes to unpack and I haven't done much decorating yet). I'll be sure to review what I wrote previously and give an update.

Thanks Heidi for the inquiry on marbelized paper. I don't know if I had previously mentioned marbelized paper or not. But here goes...

MARBELIZED PAPER

Technique one (Acrylic):

Pour liquid starch in a plastic container (one large enough to hold the paper you wish to marbelize). Add a few drops of the first color of acrylic paint and twirl gently with a straw on top of the starch. Add the next color - twirl. Be careful not to mix the paints too much. Continue adding colors until you get the desired effect. Lay the paper gently on top of the mixture. Lift out the paper and lay on a stack of paper towels (you can use newspaper but the ink may bleed onto your new design) Allow marbelized paper to dry for approximately 4 hours.

Technique two (Chalk and water):

In a pan of water large enough to hold the paper you wish to marbelize, scrape the desired color chalk dusts in. Twirl lightly then insert paper (this only takes a few seconds). Place wet paper between layers of paper towel with a heavy object on top so that it may dry. Spray the dried paper with fixative or heavy duty hairspray.

There are many other methods of marbelizing paper including using shaving cream or using a straw with soapy colored water. STILL NOT FINISHED

Okay, I hadn't checked in earlier because I didn't complete my goal. I still haven't completed the baby quilt yet. But I've been having a great time!

This weekend I cleaned my house (with the exeption of the computer room) because I had guests. We had a wonderful time. My sister gave me several plants which I added to my flower bed. My four year old and I are going to work on some candy scarecrows for her classmates. We have to make 13 scarecrows.

GOALS FOR THE WEEKEND

I am in the final stages of completing the "baby Amanda" quilt. I've done all of the finishing touches except adding the butterfly embellishments to the interior of the quilt. After I finish that I will need to wash the quilt in a mild detergent - I use All Baby Care Plus; and then clip all loose threads. My goal is to complete the butterfly embellishments this weekend. I've got alot to do this weekend including attending the local "Syrup Sopping" - a family fun day in a small neighboring community where you can purchase homemade syrup, crafts and other things; I'm also attending a family reunion meeting (not looking forward to this); My daughter was invited to a birthday party (2 days before the party *sigh*); and then there is church. So my weekend should be full of fun and excitement and I plan to enjoy every moment.

OTHER PROJECTS:

I've been making religious refrigerator magnets, some of which will be placed in gift baskets from my church. I have the material to make fleece throws - I plan to give at least one to an elderly person in the community. The others will be given to family and friends.

Okay, I've got work to do.

STILL SLACKING

Well, it's been a while since I've posted.

Lots has happened since my last entry. My friends are having babies. Little Maya weighed 7 lbs. 9 oz. and was 20 inches long. "Baby Amanda" came a couple of weeks early weighing in at 6 lbs. 9 oz. and was 20 inches long. Both babies are healthy and at home with their moms.

Problem - I still haven't finished "Baby Amanda's" quilt. I was putting the final touches on it when my sewing machine started acting up. I will have to install a new needle (I've got a supply at home) before I can proceed. I will stop procrastinating and finish that this weekend.

REFRIGERATOR MAGNETS
I've picked up a couple of extra projects along the way. Now I'm making cute little refrigerator magnets out of glass blobs (clear 1" round glass pieces which are flat on the bottom). I am printing bible verses in a 1" circle and cutting them out. I then glue the verse to the flat side of the blob with tacky glue (dries clear and stronger than regular white glue). I then glue a round magnet on top of that (I've been using the really strong magnets for this to guarantee that it can hold the glass and a sheet of heavy paper if necessary). I let this dry for a couple of days before using. You could replace the verse with a photo or piece of art.


PRESSED FLOWERS
I've been busy pressing flowers to use on homemade cards. I pick flowers and leaves that I would like to preserve. Place them in an old phone book - every 20 pages or so (check to make sure that the flowers lay flat before closing the phone book). Place filled phone book underneath a heavy object (I use a basket that is filled with books and magazines) and leave. I leave mine in for a couple of weeks and they come out perfectly. I recently used a large pressed flower on a birthday card for my niece and she loved it. I coated the flower with tacky glue and let it dry for a couple of days. The texture of the flower was still there but it was protected from my sometimes careless niece. The weather is starting to change so I'm going to raid my sisters flower bed for more flowers to press.

I've still got to finish the quilt that I started over four years ago. Sew two more quilts for a friend (she's expecting twins). Print Christmas cards (I've selected a photo of my daughter from last year at Christmas). Now I will add some special effects with Adobe Photoshop and print to JetPrint professional photo paper (4 to a page). And make more gifts in a jar, and....

SLACKING OFF

I've been a slacker for the past week.

I have not finished the "baby Amanda quilt" but my guest bathroom is coming together nicely. I've got about three weeks before baby Amanda's expected delivery date. I've started on my calendar project and am collecting photos and art to be used for each month. I've decided to do a more general calendar this year - a "one fits all" if you will. It will save me a lot of time and energy.

I've been collecting wonderful ideas from members from my Yahoo Groups and can't wait to find time to start some of those. Until next time...

GREAT WEEK

I plan to finish the "baby Amanda" quilt this weekend. I've got to purchase more binding and the backing for the "quilt in progress". I will also finish replacing the wallpaper panel in the guest bathroom. I do not plan to start any new projects this weekend because I've got several events which I've volunteered to help with coming up.

Below is my recipe for Southern Biscuits. Enjoy!

SOUTHERN BISCUITS   

Ingredients   

2 1/4 cups self-rising flour
3/4 cup shortening or margarine
1 cup non-fat buttermilk

 Directions
1 Combine and mix ingredients together. Pour out on floured waxed paper. Pat the dough out with your hands until dough is not sticky (add a little flour if necessary). Fold double. Cut biscuits with a biscuit cutter.
2 Bake on a cookie sheet at 425 degrees F (220 degrees C) for 20-25 minutes.
